SPOILER WARNING!!!!

This movie was foul mouthed and chock full of crude sophomoric humor, so of course I highly recommend it.

It is almost like two movies intercut together, one about two best friend losers trying to get booze for a party for some girls, and the other about a super nerd who calls himself “McLovin” who ends up hanging out with two stupid cops.

There is some super funny shit going down and I really don’t have any negatives to say.

Go rent it!

The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass Movie PosterIMDB Link

SPOILER WARNING!!!

I never read the book this was based on so excuse me for my ignorance.

This movie is about a steampunk alternate universe stuck in the forties where people’s souls are external and take the form of animals. For some reason all the cool people have cool soul animals like leopards and eagles and all the bad people have bad soul animals like snakes and bugs and wierd mean yellow monkeys.

The strange part is nobody ever notices the type of soul animals people have. If I lived in that universe I would only hang out with people who had cool soul animals(Just my luck mine would turn out to be something stupid, like a sloth). I can’t understand how their society operates on a day to day basis, I mean really, are you gonna make a deal with a guy who’s soul animal is a snake?

Also they called them demons! Why would they alienate the christians like that? The christians were critical to the success of a similar movie called ”The Lion Witch and Wardrobe”. They should have just called them “Souls” or something.

Besides that it was a good movie but it ended in the middle with a whole slew of quests to finish. Sequel time!

Good acting, good questing, the little girl was a tough chick!

So go ahead and see it!

Live Free or Die Hard Movie PosterIMDB Link

SPOILER WARNING!!!

I liked the first one, don’t remember the second one, hated the third one, but thought this one was pretty good.

The guy from the apple comercial who is Apple is a hacker. (They should have gotten PC to play a bad guy!) He helped the bad guys take control of the US infrastructure by mistake. They are after him to kill him because they are done with him. Bruce Willis has other ideas, like saving him. He is hero because there is no one else left to do it(that’s what he says).

The only bad part is that the guy is indestructable - he jumps out of cars going 60 miles an hour and gets scratched up a little and limps. He falls off a bridge, lands on the tail of a harrier (”True Lies” anyone?) then slides down two stories of concrete and gets a little more scratched up.

I fell off a razor scooter and broke my arm. Ow.

But still - goods movie - good action - go ahead and rent it.

28 Weeks Later

28 Weeks Later Movie Poster

SPOILER WARNING!!!

At the Start of this flick there are a bunch of people barricaded in a house.  The zombies(I know that technically they are “infected” but they act like zombies so I call them that) get in (of course) and they run around and die.

One guy is a chicken and leaves his wife to the zombies, jumping out the window and running away.

The movie then picks up like - let me think - twenty eight weeks later.

America has set up a zone for survivors and expats to live while they do something I forgot to the contryside.

The chicken guy (the dude from “The Full Monty”) is coming back with his two kids. he is a big shot. The kids sneak out and go to thier old house wheree they find a few pictures and up in the attic -THEIR MOM!

Somehow she survived. The military finally catches up with the kids(great job in containing them!) and takes them all back.

They test the wife and she is infected but immune, so they strap her to a gurnney and put her in a “safe” room. I don’t know why she is treated so rudely.

Her husband hears about her and goes to visit. He sneaks in and kisses her. they probably should have put a warning sign or something because not he is infected. So he pukes blood on her and kills her and runs away. He starts infecting everyone and alarms sound and the americans are told to kill ‘em all. the kids are running around with the rest of them but one soldier decides to help them escape.

Well it turns out the kids have the special immune gene but they are being chased by zombies. lots of blood and gore - the dad even comes after them - but the kids get rescued after everbody else dies.

I didn’t really like it. It seemed kinda cobbled together. Too many chases and you get all chased out.

Maybe the third one will be better.

Go ahead and rent it but be warned.

SPOILER WARNING!!!

Don’t get me wrong, I love Robert Rodriguez’s work,  from El Mariachi on up, but this one is a little TOO over the top. But I guess that’s what it’s supposed to be.

It seems a bit pretentious to purposely mess up the film to make it look old-timey and the plot is just plain bad, but the blood and gore and death make it worthwhile.

The machine gun leg is as hokey as it sounds, and over acting is rampant. Also they did not need to kill the kid like that.

In conclusion: Go ahead and rent it but do not expect too much.

I am changing the format of my reviews because I can’t give enough detailed information and a proper reason for my opinion without spoiling the movies so that is what I am going to do.

SPOILER WARNING!!!!

This one is a renter. I was wondering why it was not a blockbuster when it came out. I blamed the advertising. This movie seemed COOL! Nick Cage, Jessica Beil. He sees the future! Action, adventure, and a kick ass premise. Nick is a magician/psychic who really is psychic. So he is hiding in plain sight.

The catch is he only sees two minutes into the future. Except when it comes to Jessica for some unexplained reason.

So the government wants him to stop a terrorist nuclear attack - yeah a little over used in movies but I could live with it. But Nick does not want to cooperate, so they go after him. He uses his ability to trick them and escape by the skin of his teeth.

The bad guys(french!) have the government  agents under surveillance so they say to themselves, ”If the government wants him so bad then we have to kill him.”

Yeah I know, a little silly but like I said before, I could live with it if it stays COOL.

So they go running around alot and the bad guys get Jessica so Nick cooperates with the government and there is a big battle with explosions and etc. But then a nuke goes off and Nick says “I made a big mistake.” and they all die.

Then  he wakes up back at the grand canyon before any of it happens and goes out and cooperates with the agents instead of running and drives off like it never happened, which is true, it never did.

So now I know why it was not a hit:

No one likes that kind of ending -it was all a dream - etc. People have two hours of emotional investment in the plot and then when you tell them it never happened they feel like they have been ripped off. It is a big waste of time.

It sucks.

Now what I would have done for an ending is something different, something tricky and cool.

I don’t know. It’s too late to rewrite it so I won’t put any effort into it.

STARRING: Anthony Hopkins

IMDB: http://imdb.com/title/tt0488120/

The Lookout

ABOUT: A kid gets into a car accident for a stupid reason - his fault - and gets a head injury. He works at a bank as a janitor and some high school aquaintances who went bad talk him into helping them rob the bank. The  kid has to do a kind of “Memento” thing to beat the bad guys.

STARRING: That guy from Third Rock.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427470/

PROS: good acting and suspenseful in parts. The blind guy was cool.

CONS: The girl thing is never properly resolved and I knew the cop was going to die the first time he showed up on screen. It was kind of predictable.

PACIFIERS: kinda sucked, 2 out of 5 pacifiers. Pass unless you are bored and there is not another one to rent.
